In recognition for its history and architecture and intended to preserve the island's character, Ministerial Decree no.1824 declared Hydra a National patrimony as early as in 1962.

† Afin de préserver le caractère de l'île, le Décret ministériel n° 1824 a dès 1962 déclaré Hydra patrimoine national. La construction et l'entretien des bâtiments y sont strictement réglementés, ce qui signifie qu'il n'y a aucune construction moderne à trouver sur l'île.
